The ViewSonic V210 is a very attractive wireless,
10.4-inch active matrix color LCD touch screen display with an 800x600
resolution that runs Microsoft Windows CE.NET 4.2 operating system.
It can be used in one of the following modes
of operation.
|
|
As a Stand alone Display
You can use the ViewSonic V210 as a stand
alone display. In this mode, the native Internet Explorer of the Windows
CE.NET can open up the Entertainment GUI to a room - which is what a lot
of people want to do. This is quick and easy to do, but, note
that this mode of operation does not allow seeing the floor plan view.
To use this mode of operation, The Domain
Controller should be configured with a Static
IP address. Alternatively, the homeowner's network should be running
a DNS server. DHCP by itself should not be used because the V210 display
will be launching a URL with an IP address or DNS name.
|
Open the URL
Run the Internet Explorer application that
comes with the V210. Enter the following URL:
http://<IP Addr>:8080/MainPage?svg=no
replacing "<IP Addr>" with
the IP address of the Domain Controller (you can get the IP Address of
the Domain Controller from the RIGHT hand column of Find My Destiny).
If the project only has one room in it, then
the Internet Explorer will automatically open the Entertainment menu in
that room. If there are multiple rooms, a page will open up asking you
to choose the appropriate room.
After the Entertainment menu has opened, save
that URL as the browser's "home" page.
You're done.
Note that the frame of the browser GUI also
appears on the screen. Therefore, you can create GUI Buttons to perform
other types of actions in the room.
|
As a remote desktop
You can use the ViewSonic V210 as a remote
desktop to display all of the Browser GUI menus that you would see on
a PC. In this mode, the V210 takes over the display of another computer.
The other computer is referred to as the "Host"
computer. And this computer must be running Windows
XP Pro (remote desktop will not work with Windows XP Home - it
must be the Pro version).
Also, you will want to make sure your ViewSonic
V210 is running version 33 or higher. You can tell which image you have
by going to "Start / Settings / Control Panel / System. The
image information is located under the General tab and within the Processor
Type text box. If it is less than 33, you will want to contact "James
Easter" <James.Easter@viewsonic.com> and ask how you can upgrade.
|
Create
a Password for the Host Computer
The first step in setting up the V210 as a
remote desktop is to make sure the host computer has a login password.
The remote desktop application will not work unless the host computer
has a login password.
Go to the Window's "Start" button
and open up the "Control Panel" as shown at the right.
Click on "User Accounts".
|
|
When the "User Accounts" menu opens
up, click on the account to change (the account you use must have administrative
privileges).
Remember the name of this account. You will
use it later when setting up the V210.
|
|
In the "User Accounts" menu, click
"Create password". |
|
Enter the password twice (and a hint, if you
like), and click "Create Password".
The host computer now has a password.
Close the "User Accounts" and "Control
Panel" windows. |
|
Enable
Remote Desktop on the Host Computer
Go to your desktop and right click on "My
Computer" and select "Properties".
|
|
The "System Properties" menu will
pop up.
Select the "Remote" tab.
Click the checkbox labeled "Allow users
to connect remotely to this computer.
You will get a warning message about remote
sessions. Click OK to dismiss it.
Click OK on the "System Properties"
menu.
|
|
Display
Information about the Host Computer
Re-Open the "System Properties"
menu by right clicking on "My Computer" and selecting "Properties". |
|
Select the "Computer Name" tab.
Do not change anything on this menu. We just
need some information from it to set up the V210. |
|
Configure
the ViewSonic V210
Double click the "Remote Desktop Connection"
icon on the ViewSonic V210 panel. |
|
You will get the following default menu.
Click the "Options >>" button
to get the menu to set up a connection. |
|
The menu above will convert into the menu
at the right.
Fill in the following fields
"Computer" is the name of the computer.
Get this from the "System Properties" menu of the Host computer.
"User name" is the user account
name that you created a password for in the steps above.
"Password" is the password you created
for the Host computer.
"Domain" is the Windows concept
of a group of computers that talk with one another. Usually, you leave
this blank.
Click "Save As...". |
|
You are now saving the set up information.
Change the word "default" to something more meaningful such
as the name of the computer.
Then, click "OK" in the upper right
part of the window. |
|
Click "Connect".
If it does not connect, make sure you have
wireless access by double tapping the double computer icon in the lower
right of the screen. Check that the IP address is valid. If it is not,
check the wireless setup. |
|
As you can see from the display at the right,
you have access to the same display as you would see on your PC. |
|
Note that turning the display on and off will
not affect the settings. However, rebooting the display by pushing the
reset button will cause the V210 to loose the computer name and password
of the host computer. Therefore, you may want to save these to permanent
storage.
