Change the DNS Name or IP Address

The Domain Controller has 4 ways it can be identified.

  1. Its "Assigned Name" is the name you give it when it is added to the project in the Design Module. You can change this in the "Domain Controllers" layer of the Design Module by clicking on the icon of the Domain Controller in your project.

  2. Its "DNS Name" (a human readable address that represents an IP address) defaults to "d3k_" plus the last 4 digits of the MAC address of the controller. You can Change the DNS Name of the Domain 3000.

  3. Its "IP Address" defaults to using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to obtain an IP address.  However, if it cannot find a DHCP server, then it will default to 172.16.16.116 (with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0). You can Change the IP Address to a static IP address in the Domain 3000.

  4. Its "MAC Address" which is of the form "00:50:c2:11:xx:xx" where "00:50:c2" is the manufacturer's code of Destiny Networks and "11:xx:xx" are unique addresses assigned on a sequential basis. This address cannot be changed.

Change the DNS Name

Run Find My Destiny (if it is not already running).

If it automatically launches a Browser GUI and then hides itself, click on the   icon in the system tray at the lower right of your PC.

Your PC should be on the same subnet as the Domain 3000 and it should have the same subnet mask.

Click the "Name & IP Settings" button on the lower left.

You will get a menu like the one at the right, but with different addresses.

Change the text to the right of "Controller Name". For example, change it to "Theater_Controller" as shown in the example at the right. Only alphanumeric characters, underscores and dashes are allowed.

Click "OK".

The menu at the right will pop up.

It asks you to "reset the Domain Controller" by pushing the reset button on the back of the Domain 3000 with a paper clip.  The reset button is next to the Power indicator LED (as shown).

The Domain 3000 will save the changes and reboot.

Change the IP Address

Run Find My Destiny (if it is not already running).

If it automatically launches a Browser GUI and then hides itself, click on the   icon in the system tray at the lower right of your PC.

There are 2 common reasons for wanting to change the IP address of the Domain 3000.

  1. You have a DHCP server on your network, but would like to make sure that the Domain 3000 always stays at the same IP address (note that this is much less necessary than with most networked devices because Find My Destiny finds the Domain Controller even if the IP address has changed).

  2. You are using "Static IP addresses" on your network (that is, you do not have a DHCP server) and the static IP address of your network is not 172.16.0.0 - the default network of the Domain 3000 when it does not find a DHCP server.

In both cases, the easiest way to change the IP address of the Domain Controller is to do the following.

  1. Connect your PC directly to the Domain 3000 with an Ethernet crossover cable.

  2. Give your PC a static IP address that is on the same network as the Domain Controller

  3. Change the IP address of the Domain Controller.

  4. Change the IP address of your PC back to its original address.

o

Connect your PC directly to the Domain 3000 with an Ethernet crossover cable

Remove the Ethernet crossover cable (the yellow one with red tape near the connectors) from the box. Note that this is not a regular Ethernet cable and should not be used for any purpose other than connecting your PC directly to the Domain 3000.

Connect your PC directly to the Domain 3000 via the Ethernet crossover cable.

Connect the power supply to the Domain 3000.

Give the Domain 3000 5 minutes to boot up while you do the next set of steps.

o

Give Your PC a Static IP address of 172.16.16.117

Configure your PC with an "Static IP address" of 172.16.16.117 so that your PC comes up on the same network as the default address of the Domain 3000.

Do this by going to your desktop and right clicking on "My Network Places" and selecting "Properties".

o

The "Network Connections" menu will pop up.

In the "Network Connections" menu make sure your wireless network is disabled (right click it and select Disable, if necessary).

Then, in the same "Network Connections" menu, right click on the Ethernet port that is plugged into the Domain 3000 and select Properties.

o

The "Local Area Connection Properties" menu will pop up.

On the "Local Area Connection Properties" menu, select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the "Properties" button.

o

On the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"  menu, select, "Use the following IP address". If this was already selected, then jot down all the information on this page

Change the information on this page to the following:

IP address: 172.16.16.117

Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0

Default gateway: 172.16.0.1

the rest will not matter.

After configuring the Domain 3000, remember to change your settings back.

Click OK to this menu and the others and go on opening "Find My Destiny".

o

Open Find My Destiny (PC directly to the Domain 3000 with an Ethernet crossover cable)

From the Microsoft Windows "Start" button, select "All Programs", "Destiny Networks", "Ubiquity 2.5", "Find My Destiny".

The "Find My Destiny" application will find the Domain 3000 and assist you in troubleshooting any problems you may run into.

As shown in the screen shot below, the "Find My Destiny" application has three sections.

The middle section will tell you information about your PC and its connectivity to the network. It will analyze your PC to make sure it is running the Microsoft Windows XP operating system, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and the Adobe Scalar Vector Graphics (SVG) viewer (which was installed with our software). These should all have a green "OK" after them. It will also check your Ethernet network interface card. If you are using the Ethernet crossover cable to connect your PC to the Domain 3000, then you should see an IP address of 172.16.16.117 and this test should also have a green "OK" after it. Finally, it will test your Internet connection. Note that Internet connectivity is not necessary for using Destiny Networks' products. If you are using the Ethernet crossover cable to connect your PC to the Domain 3000, then this test will show a red "Not Available". Later, if you connect the Domain 3000 to your home network, this information can be useful to see if your network is behaving properly.

The right section of the application will show you information about the Domain Controller and its connection to the network. when the name of a Domain 3000 appears in the box on the upper right, click on the name to select it (for example, the name "d3k_E11B" was clicked on in the example below). The name of the Domain 3000 consists of the "d3k" abbreviation of the product plus the last 4 bytes of the MAC address of your particular unit. The MAC address is written on the back of the Domain 3000. You must click on the name before proceeding to the next step. If the name does not appear, make sure your PC is connected to the Domain 3000 via the special Ethernet crossover cable supplied in the box and that the Domain 3000 power supply is plugged in.

Soon after clicking on the name of the Domain 3000, information about the Domain 3000 will appear below the box (you may have to scroll the window to see it). You will see information about the Domain 3000's network connectivity and version of software. Below those two things, you will see the boot up status of the Domain 3000. In the example below the status is "Browser interface up and running". This is the final step and the Domain 3000 is fully up and running. If it says something else, please wait for the Domain 3000 to finish booting up.

Since you are using the crossover Ethernet cable, then you will get the warning shown below about the missing DHCP server. You can disregard the warning because you are connected directly to your PC, and, therefore, are not using a DHCP server.

o

Change the IP Address of the Domain Controller

Click the "Name & IP Settings" button on the lower left.

You will get a menu like the one at the right.

Uncheck the check box labeled "Use DHCP to get an IP Address & Subnet mask".

Change the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway addresses as appropriate.

Click "OK".

Note that if your computer and the Domain Controller are now on different networks, then after rebooting the Domain Controller, they will not be able to talk to each other until you return your PC to its original IP settings.

The menu at the right will pop up.

It asks you to "Reset the Domain Controller" by pushing the reset button on the back of the Domain 3000 with a paper clip.  The reset button is next to the Power indicator LED (as shown).

The Domain 3000 will save the changes and reboot.

Change the IP address of your PC back to its original address

At this point, the Domain Controller will be on the new Static IP address. However, you PC may still be on the 172.16.16.117 address. Repeat the steps above (Give Your PC a Static IP address) - substituting the IP addresses that you jotted down - to return your PC to its previous IP address. Then, re-open Find My Destiny to launch the Browser GUI or Open the Design Module.
