Remote Access Options

GoToMyPC

GoToMyPC is an Internet service that allows you to make a chosen PC remotely accessible over the Internet as if you were sitting in front of it. For complete information on subscribing to this paid service, you can go to http://www.gotomypc.com.

Most Internet Service Providers (ISP) supply IP addresses through the means of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). A benefit in using GoToMyPC is that it works without the need for a static IP address. It also works with connections that have a Static IP address. Static IP addresses do not change, and are available through the ISP at additional cost.

Once you have become a subscriber to GoToMyPC, you will download an agent, which resides on the PC you wish to access. Then, whenever necessary, you or people you authorize, can simply go to the GoToMyPC web site and log in with your account login name and password. You can then access the PC's screen as if you were sitting in front of it.

This is a useful option for system designers, installers or support technicians who wish to use the Ubiquity software tools such as Design Module, Find My Destiny, Check My Destiny and the GUI interface to access, configure and maintain the Domain Controller.

Direct Connection Through a Firewall

If you would like to open a whole in the firewall to remotely connect to a Domain Controller, then you will want to open the following ports:

Application

Ports

Browser GUI, Check My Destiny, Console

8080 UDP and TCP

Design Module

16000 and 16001 UDP and TCP

Find My Destiny (note 1)

Device Description Wizard

Note 1: Find My Destiny only searches the LAN for Domain Controllers.

In opening the above ports on the firewall, you will want to re-direct the inbound IP address on those ports to the IP address of the Domain Controller. Note that this requires knowing the IP address of the connection to the Internet and of the Domain Controller. If you are going to use this method, then it is advisable to set up a static IP address for the Domain Controller. For the address of the connection to the Internet, if the connection uses a static IP address then this will be easy to do. If, on the other hand, it is a dynamic IP address, then you will need to find that address at the specific time. One way to do this is using an application called ShieldsUp (click "Proceed" and then choose to test the "Common Ports") from Gibson Research Corporation. It must be run from inside the firewall and it will test the vulnerability of the ports of the firewall while telling you the Internet address of the connection. If you want to find out the IP address from outside of the firewall, then you may want to set up one of the following services:
