Wires for Telephones

There are a number of different wire types that can be used for conventional analog telephones, but we recommend that you run Cat 5E wire using the same T568A wiring scheme that you use for data networking. This type of wire will support:

• Conventional analog phones (a.k.a. POTS phones Plain Old Telephone Service phones - including touch tone and rotary dial phones.

• PBX phones Phones that connect to a Private Branch Exchange. For more information see PBX under Telephones in the List of Home Automation Applications., and

• Voice over IP (VoIP) phones Where the analog signal is digitized and then encapsulated in IP (Internet Protocol) so that it can run over Ethernet, WiFi, and the Internet..

In addition, it makes all the telephone wires the same as the data networking wires and, therefore, interchangeable.
